Essentials

The few things people get wrong most. If you use the brand only from this section, you will be safe. For partners, press, sponsors, and community members.

A
Who We Are

Introduction

This book is for everyone who wants to use the AlmaLinux OS brand correctly: our team, partners, press, sponsors, and the community. Anyone creating something that carries the brand.

It covers the essentials of how and when to use our identity, so it stays consistent and recognizable wherever it shows up. Use it freely, and reach out if you are ever unsure about anything.

Usage of the AlmaLinux OS marks is governed by the AlmaLinux OS Trademark Usage Policy.

V
Who We Are

Vision

AlmaLinux OS is an open source, community‑governed enterprise Linux distribution, stewarded by the nonprofit AlmaLinux OS Foundation. It was founded in 2021 with initial backing from CloudLinux and is now owned and governed by its community. Why “Alma”? The community is the soul of Linux, and in the spirit of that dedicated community, the distribution was named Alma: a Latin word for soul.

M
Who We Are

Mission

To provide a free, enterprise‑grade Linux distribution that is stable, long‑supported, and fully compatible with RHEL, with regular releases and long support windows. Governed by the community through the AlmaLinux OS Foundation.

Who We Are

Core Values

These values guide how AlmaLinux OS is built and governed: in the open, and by the community that depends on it. They are set and kept by that community, not handed down from a single owner.

Always free, forever
Open source and forever free, owned by a nonprofit foundation. It cannot be bought or sold.
Community‑governed and democratic
Individual membership is free for any community member, not only those who write code. Members elect the Board.
No single owner can capture it
Bylaws stop any single employer or sponsor from holding more than one seat on the Board of Directors.
Fully compatible with the relevant RHEL release
Built for tight compatibility, so mission‑critical workloads run without surprises or breaking changes.
A good open source citizen
We send our patches and fixes upstream, so the whole open source ecosystem benefits, not just AlmaLinux users.
Considerate continuity
Choices follow real user needs, like building x86‑64‑v2 packages to extend support for older hardware by another decade.
Essentials

The Voice,
in Brief

AlmaLinux is a community project run by volunteers, not a corporation. Sound like a helpful person who is glad you are here.

Warm and human
Welcome newcomers without talking down to them. Write the way you would explain something to a colleague you like.
Plain over polished
Say the thing directly. Prefer short, clear sentences and everyday words over jargon or buzzwords.
Confident, not hype
State what is true and useful. Skip breathless superlatives and fear‑based messaging. The work speaks for itself.
Inclusive and neutral
Address the reader as “you”. When pronouns are not known, use they/them. Do not guess from a name.
Consistent and specific
Name things the same way every time and prefer concrete detail over vague claims.
Essentials

The Logo

Voice and Tone

Mechanics that carry the voice
  • “AlmaLinux” is one word, capital A and L, in all copy.
  • No long dashes (em‑dashes or en‑dashes). Use a colon, a period, or parentheses instead.
  • “AlmaLinux Day” always takes a colon: “AlmaLinux Day: Tokyo”, “AlmaLinux Day: LA”.
  • Headings use Title Case; body lists and sentences use sentence case.

Iconography

The brand uses Bootstrap Icons, a specific open source icon set. Do not substitute another icon library or draw custom icons.

  • Use icons with restraint: support meaning, do not decorate. An icon works best as a small label beside text.
  • Icons inherit the color of the surrounding text. Do not introduce a new accent color just for an icon.
  • Icons that carry meaning need an accessible text label; purely decorative icons are hidden from assistive technology.
